Edmonton Pitch Competition

Before we jump into the end, let's start at the beginning...
There was an exciting, yet nervous buzz in the air at our Edmonton Pitch Competition! Scholars showed in their best business professional attire ready to pitch their subject properties to our panel of judges. Our annual Pitch Competition was once again hosted at Creative Hive, an incredible space in West Edmonton that many were not aware existed. We always love seeing the faces and hearing the feedback from event attendees about how taken aback they are that the space exists. This year, we were able to occupy two of the Hive's rooms—one room for the presentations, the other room for dinner and photos.

Our judges for the 2024 Edmonton Pitch Competition presented by Altus Group included:

All of our judges have been involved with our program in some way, shape or form.

We were thrilled to have alumnus, Jamellah, come back and be on the other side of the table. She competed for the $10,000 scholarship back in 2022 as part of Team Cushman & Wakefield. She is now a university student at the University of Alberta. You can learn more about her in our recent series episode of Blueprints & Breakthroughs.

Brock and Afsar have been judges for our Pitch Competitions since the very first one in the spring of 2022. They've had to make the tough decision of choosing a winner, usually torn about who to give it to because of how fantastic each group is. Franky and Michelle are first-timers to the judging table, but they've been thoroughly involved with our first Calgary cohort. Franky stepped up to be a facilitator for our Calgary scholars, while Michelle stepped in to be a mentor for Team Ryan.

We had five teams of scholars show up to present on their respective subject properties:

  • Team Edmonton CREW with scholars Soleil, Manahil, and Halima presented on Stadium Yards
  • Team BOMA Edmonton with scholars Ekamjot and Malaika presented on Le Louvre
  • Team Canderel Group with scholars Qwynton and Arjun presented on The Peak
  • Team NAIOP Edmonton with scholars Lamar, Grayson, and Marion presented on Century Gardens

Each team of scholars showed up with up with poise, personality, and knowledge. These scholars successfully presented a comprehensive analysis of their multi-family properties located here in Edmonton. They thoroughly demonstrated their knowledge of concepts such as the investment mandate, a real estate proforma, market rent and investment sale comparables, a capital stack, and more. They absolutely blew away everyone in the audience, including the judges, their mentors, family, friends, and industry professionals.

After having a lengthy discussion and tabulating each team's scores, the judges made their decision:

Blueprints & Breakthroughs: Episode 2

For episode 2 of our series, Blueprints & Breakthroughs sponsored by Ryan, we got to sit down with cohort 1 alumna, Jamellah.

Jamellah was one of our scholars who made the best of our program. She showed up consistently to the workshops, worked hard to learn the material, and absolutely crushed her Pitch Competition presentation with her teammate for Team Cushman & Wakefield!

In our sit down with her, she shared more about her experience during her time at the REET Institute, her connection with her mentors during the program and after the program, and what she’s up to now.
