Issue 15
Calgary Pitch Competition
Our first Calgary Pitch Competition was hosted in the beautiful space of The Ampersand, thanks to Aspen Properties. The space is absolutely breath-taking, making it the perfect stage for our first cohort of scholars. Our scholars showed up early to meet with their mentors and prep for the big pitch to our panel of judges. In addition to using the main lobby area for our Pitch Competition, we were also able to use the Conference Centre during our 8-week program.
Our judges for the 2024 Calgary Pitch Competition presented by Altus Group included:
- Lisa Miller, General Manager at ONE Properties
- Martin Lee, Manager of Financial Planning & Analysis at Canadian Urban Limited and Facilitator for our REET Institute Edmonton Cohort
- Sorab Gill, Vice President or Asset Management at Canadian Urban Limited and Facilitators for our REET Institute Edmonton Cohort
- David Shum, Managing Director at Cushman & Wakefield
- Morley Barr, Senior Vice President at Aspen Properties
We had three teams of scholars show up to present on their respective subject properties:
- Team Oxford Properties Group with scholars Zahir, Jolene, and Halle presented on BLVD Beltline
- Team BOMA Edmonton with scholars Bontu and Xavier presented on Shawnessy Station
- Team Ryan with scholars Mec, Gurmukh, and Jonah presented on The Bridge at Bridgeland
Each team of scholars showed up ready to convince the panel of judges that their subject property was the best investment. They were knowledgeable and creative with their presentations, incorporating videos in addition to their speaking points. They thoroughly demonstrated their knowledge of concepts such as the investment mandate, a real estate proforma, market rent and investment sale comparables, a capital stack, and more. They absolutely blew away everyone in the audience, including the judges, their mentors, family, friends, and industry professionals.
After having a lengthy discussion and tabulating each team's scores, the judges made their decision. The scores were incredibly close with only a 3-point difference between first and second place. You could hear an audible gasp in the audience when scores were read out loud. Each team did an incredible job, and we're all so proud of them.
